Health Benefits of Zero G

Zeroing In on the Benefits of Zero G Sleep [1,2]

We all know how important it is to get a good night’s rest — it sets the tone for how you feel mentally and physically the next day. And, while a quality mattress, calming sleep environment, and just-right pillows can go a long way toward comfort and relaxation, research has shown that sleeping in an inclined position can deliver valuable health benefits. The Zero G position on Ergomotion adjustable bases goes a step further by raising the knees slightly for even more potential benefits.

The Science of Zero G [1,2]

Our Zero G feature, which stands for zero gravity, was adapted from a carefully calculated body position developed by NASA to minimize the force astronauts experience during space launches. The Zero G position involves placing the body in a neutral posture, with the head and shoulders raised and the knees slightly elevated.

Powered with this knowledge, Ergomotion integrated our own preset Zero G position into our Quest 2.0, 2.5, and 4.0 adjustable bases to help alleviate pressure from common pain points like the lower back, hips, and shoulders — while supporting many other wellness benefits you may not expect.

Zero G Features and Benefits

Breathe Easy [3]

When you lie flat on your back, throat and neck tissue can block your airways. Elevating your upper body in a Zero G position opens up air passageways for easier breathing. This can have a positive impact on issues associated with impaired breathing including allergies, snoring, asthma and sleep apnea. As an example, one 2017 study showed that just a 7.5-degree incline reduced the severity of obstructive sleep apnea by an average of 31.8%.

Keep Your Head Up [4,5]

Keeping your head at an incline not only improves breathing issues, it can also mitigate heartburn, fight post-nasal drip, reduce dark eye circles and puffy face, and provide support for injuries and chronic conditions related to the nervous system. There’s even early evidence to suggest that sleeping with the head and torso elevated can reduce pressure inside the eyes to help slow the progression of glaucoma.

Raise Your Feet [6,7,8]

The most readily apparent benefit of sleeping with your knees slightly bent and your feet raised is to relieve pressure along the spine — particularly the lower back. Yet, the potential benefits of raising your feet go much deeper. This position uses gravity to your heart’s advantage, promoting efficient circulation to the lower extremities that may help to prevent varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis, reduce edema pain and swollen feet, and decrease strain on the heart muscle.

Good Vibrations [9]

In addition to the benefits of elevating the head and feet while sleeping, research has shown that wholebody vibration may play a role in fitness and wellness. When performed correctly, as with an adjustable base that has massage motors, it may aid in weight loss, reduce back pain, improve strength and balance in older adults, and perhaps even reduce bone loss. This makes our Relaxation Mode feature the perfect complement to the Zero G sleep experience.

Zero G Takeaways [2]

We’ve highlighted the key benefits of Zero G and how it can add to your overall sleep health. Ergomotion’s adjustable bases have features that can provide a Zero G sleep environment designed to help reduce pressure on the lower back, reduce snoring, stimulate circulation and more. With these and other everyday benefits, it’s clear that Zero G isn’t just for astronauts anymore!
